Chapter-1
The wail sliced through the quiet morning air, thin and desperate. At first, it blended into the hum of Vasundhara waking up temple bells, murmured prayers, the shuffle of bare feet on marble floors. But this sound was different. It didn’t belong.
It was the kind of cry that no one could ignore, but in a place as bustling and sacred as Vasundhara, it was easy for the world to keep moving, unfazed. People passed by the narrow alley leading to the old temple, some on their way to offer prayers, others on their way to beg for alms. Yet, amidst the hum of the early morning, the cry continued, soft but insistent.
Meera had been awake since before dawn, as she always was. The small shelter where she lived was nestled just outside the temple grounds. She’d made a habit of sitting by the window early, before the day fully broke, watching the sun touch the tops of the temples, the river reflecting light like silver. But today, something was different. There was a disturbance in the usual silence.
She stood up, her body sore from years of bending and kneeling. She listened, straining her ears against the murmur of the city. The cry came again. It wasn’t a sound she could ignore.
Without a second thought, she grabbed her shawl and rushed out of the room. As she stepped into the alley, the cries grew louder, more desperate. Her heart pounded as she moved toward the sound. The alley was dark, filled with garbage, broken pots, and scraps of old cloth. Her feet crunched over discarded scraps, her eyes darting through the filth.
